Incorporated as a City in 1831, Providence became the sole Capitol of Rhode Island in 1900 after sharing the duty with four other towns and from 1854 with Newport. Founded in 1636 by a renegade preacher fleeing religious persecution, he named his new home "Providence" in thanks to God for protecting him.
